Ingredients

scaled from 4 servings
  • 2 loaves, split lengthwise French bread
  • 5 oz bulk Italian sausage
  • 1 oz sliced pepperoni
  • 1 1/2 cups mozzarella, shredded
  • 1 cup pizza or marinara sauce
  • 1, diced green bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan
  • 1/4 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp each dried oregano, garlic powder and red pepper flakes

Method (tap to check — screen stays awake)

  1. Heat the oven to 425F. Crumble the sausage into a skillet with the oil and brown it over medium-high for 6 minutes, adding the pepper for the last 2, then drain off the fat.
  2. Toast the split loaves cut-side up for 4 minutes so the bread firms up - untoasted bread turns to sponge under the sauce.
  3. Spread the sauce to the edges, season with oregano and garlic powder, then cover with mozzarella, the sausage and pepper, the pepperoni and the parmesan.
  4. Bake 10 to 12 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and the pepperoni cups have curled and crisped at the rims. Rest 3 minutes, then cut each half into portions.
