Ingredients
- 3/4 lb lean ground beef
- 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 1/4 cups instant potato flakes
- 3/4 cup whole milk
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 large, sliced yellow onions
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 1/2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 6 oz green beans
- to taste Worcestershire, salt and pepper
Method (tap to check — screen stays awake)
- Mix the beef with the panko, egg, Worcestershire, salt and pepper and shape four oval patties about an inch thick, pressing a shallow dimple in the middle of each so they stay flat.
- Sear them in a dry hot skillet over medium-high, 4 minutes a side, until a hard brown crust forms, then move them to a plate - they will finish in the gravy.
- Add half the butter and the onions to the pan and cook 6 minutes until deeply browned, scattering the flour over for the last minute and stirring so it toasts rather than tastes raw.
- Whisk in the broth, bring it to a simmer, and nestle the patties back in for 6 minutes until the gravy is thick and the meat is cooked through.
- Meanwhile boil the green beans 4 minutes and make the mashed potatoes with hot milk, the rest of the butter and salt. Plate the steaks over the potatoes and pour the onion gravy across.
